How the PHP version checker works
- 1
Fetch the page
We request the URL you enter, just like a normal browser visit, and follow redirects.
- 2
Read public signals
We look at the X-Powered-By and Server headers, PHP session cookies, CMS fingerprints and links to .php files.
- 3
Report the result
You get the PHP version, the evidence behind it, a confidence level and the version’s support status.
What the confidence level means
- High: the server reports an exact version, e.g.
X-Powered-By: PHP/8.2.12. - Medium: the server says it uses PHP but hides the version number.
- Low: only indirect hints, such as a PHPSESSID cookie or a WordPress theme path.
How to check your PHP version yourself
If you have access to the server, these methods always show the exact version, even when it is hidden from visitors.
Command line
Run php -v. The first line shows the version, e.g. PHP 8.3.12 (cli).
phpinfo()
Create a file containing <?php phpinfo();, open it in a browser, then delete it. The version is shown at the top.
WordPress
Go to Tools → Site Health → Info → Server in the dashboard.
cPanel / Plesk
Open Select PHP Version (cPanel) or PHP Settings (Plesk) for your domain.
How to upgrade an outdated PHP version
- Back up your site files and database.
- Check that your CMS, theme and plugins support the target version (WordPress users can run the PHP Compatibility Checker plugin on a staging copy).
- Switch the PHP version in your hosting panel (cPanel, Plesk) or ask your host to do it. On your own server, install the new php-fpm package and point the web server to it.
- Test the site and watch the error log, then run this checker again to confirm.
If your host does not offer PHP 8.2 or newer, it is time to move to a host that does.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check the PHP version of a website?
+
Enter the website URL in the PHP Version Checker above. The tool requests the page and reads public signals such as the X-Powered-By header, the Server header, PHP session cookies and CMS fingerprints, then shows the detected PHP version, a confidence level and whether that version is still supported.
Why can’t the PHP version be detected?
+
Many servers hide the PHP version on purpose by setting expose_php = Off in php.ini or by stripping the X-Powered-By header at a proxy or CDN such as Cloudflare. In that case the tool can often still tell that the site runs PHP, but not the exact version. To see the exact version, run php -v on the server or check phpinfo().
Is the PHP Version Checker free?
+
Yes. Checking a single URL or up to 10 URLs at once is free and requires no sign-up.
How do I check my PHP version in WordPress?
+
In the WordPress dashboard go to Tools → Site Health → Info → Server. The PHP version is listed there. You can also enter your site URL in this tool, although many WordPress hosts hide the version header.
How do I check the PHP version from the command line?
+
Run php -v in a terminal or SSH session. It prints the installed PHP CLI version, for example "PHP 8.3.12 (cli)". Note that the web server can use a different PHP version than the command line.
What does PHP end of life (EOL) mean?
+
When a PHP version reaches end of life, the PHP project stops releasing security patches for it. Websites on an EOL version are exposed to known vulnerabilities, so they should be upgraded to a supported version.
Which PHP version should I use?
+
Use the newest PHP version that your application, theme and plugins support. Any version marked “Actively supported” or “Security fixes only” in the table above is still receiving security updates.
Is it legal to check the PHP version of another website?
+
Yes. The tool only reads information the website already sends to every visitor, such as HTTP response headers and public HTML. It does not scan ports, log in or attempt to exploit anything.
